Estate Planning Made Easy: Key Steps for Peace of Mind

When you hear the phrase estate planning, you might assume it’s only for the wealthy or those who are older, or even only for people who have children. That’s one of the biggest misconceptions we addressed in a recent webinar I held, Adulting Level Expert sessions, where we dove into the topic of Estate Planning. The fact is, estate planning is for anyone who wants clarity, control, and peace of mind—no matter their age or net worth.

At its core, estate planning isn’t just about dividing assets. It’s about having a plan so your loved ones aren’t left guessing, navigating court systems, or making hard decisions without guidance. One common misunderstanding is believing that having a will alone avoids probate. In reality, a will simply provides instructions to the court—it doesn’t bypass probate. In Colorado, many assets still go through probate unless additional planning steps are taken.

This is where trusts often come into play. Unlike wills, trusts can help avoid probate altogether, allow assets to be distributed more efficiently, and offer protection for beneficiaries. Revocable trusts are commonly used because they allow you to maintain control during your lifetime, while irrevocable trusts can provide added layers of protection depending on your goals.

Equally important—and often overlooked—are documents like financial and medical powers of attorney. These allow someone you trust to step in if you’re unable to make decisions for yourself. A living will further clarifies your wishes around medical care and life support, sparing your loved ones from having to make those choices during already emotional moments.

The biggest takeaway from the session? Estate planning doesn’t have to feel heavy or overwhelming. It’s not about worst-case scenarios—it’s about making thoughtful, intentional choices that protect the people you love and bring peace of mind now.

If you’d like help getting started, I’m happy to share the Estate Readiness Checklist that was provided during the webinar. It’s a simple, practical download that walks you through what to think about and what to gather before meeting with an estate planning professional.
Just email me at maci@livelaughdenver.com, and I’ll send it your way.

Taking this step—at your own pace—is one of the most caring things you can do for your future self and your family.
